Insurers, reinsurers and brokers need to confirm where and whether a flood happened, get an early read on losses, and draw on historical data for pricing and model validation. Independent validation data is a widely recognised, persistent gap: flood-extent outputs still vary significantly between suppliers, both model-based and EO-based, and media-derived validation has historically been gathered by hand by small teams.

Media is where independent, on-the-ground reports of a flood show up. FloodTags collects, classifies and geolocates that media automatically, making it a fast, reliable and operational source of validation and event data.

One subscription, live or as confirmed event data

For insurance and reinsurance, clients use Operational Mode to work events live and monitor a portfolio, or Reports Mode to receive confirmed event data on a schedule. Reports range from short summaries to detailed overviews of each event. The Flood Presence Report shows where water was reported per area, to validate your flood model or map. Tailored analyses, such as an Event Time-series or manually validated data points, are a separate track on request.

Confirming flood events for index insurance

For the World Bank’s SEADRIF flood-index insurance across Myanmar, Lao PDR and Cambodia, FloodTags confirmed flood occurrence and severity from online media to support loss estimation, catching false positives and false negatives where satellite imagery was unreliable in urban areas or too slow for flash floods. Confirmation came within hours to days, with a confidence score, and because most events were covered by multiple articles, errors self-corrected and few events were missed.
